The Team
Adult Custody Division Headquarters operates strategically to support our ten correctional centres located throughout the province. The Staffing team is comprised of one deputy warden (this position) who supervises a team of four, who work in separate but related portfolios: human resources/occupational health and safety; training and development; recruitment; and marketing. Within the recruitment area of business, you will be overseeing the provincial recruitment of correctional officers. Reporting to the deputy provincial director responsible for the staffing portfolio, this position operates at a senior strategic level within headquarters to promote consistency and high standards within the division. The deputy warden participates in the leading, planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of strategic initiatives and major provincial projects.
The Role
You will provide expert advice, guidance, and recommendations to senior managers on strategic issues and challenges, and recommend revised approaches. The deputy warden works closely with wardens, deputy wardens, and staffing managers, while also representing the staffing headquarters lens on various committees. This position also works closely with JIBC personnel as an external partner responsible for correctional officer training. The deputy warden develops strong working relationships with the BC Public Service Agency, WorkSafeBC and represents BC Corrections on inter-agency committees, contributing to the development of strategic policies.
Qualifications:
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Four (4) years’ experience leading people in a large, complex, safety sensitive and dynamic work environment; or five (5) years related experience, or an equivalent combination of experience education and/or training may be considered.
The following may be considered as an equivalent combination of education, training, and related experience,
but may not be limited to:
- Five (5) years’ experience gained working in a leadership position within a government environment with two (2) years of related experience; OR,
- Five (5) years of other related experience with a related post-secondary education degree/diploma.
Related experience, but may not be limited to:
- Experience with large operational environments, development and/or implementation of strategic plans, projects and/or large initiatives, and program analysis.
- Experience in leading large teams and committees involving other senior leaders and external stakeholders.
- Experience/leadership with human resources management and labour relations in unionized work environment.
- Experience working with senior level government officials at the Director, Executive Director, and/or Assistant Deputy Minister levels or the equivalent.
Preference may be given to a candidate who has the following education/experience:
- Post-secondary related degree or diploma consisting of one or more subject matter areas of study: criminology, business, criminal justice/legal, behavioural science, or related discipline.
- Working in a correctional environment with remanded and/or sentenced populations.
- Working for or cooperatively with corrections allied partners/agencies, including health, sheriffs, crown/legal counsel, police, indigenous organizations/leaders, and/or community corrections.
