The Team
The Forest Ecosystems and Analytics Branch (FEAB) in the Office of the Chief Forester is a collaborative team that helps shape the future of forest management in B.C. through science, policy, and data-driven insights. Formed in 2025, the team includes about 18 professionals across the province and works closely with researchers, Indigenous Nations, government partners, and industry to support healthy, resilient forests and informed decision-making.

The Role
This role leads climate-related research and reporting for the State of the Forests Reporting initiative, helping to improve understanding of forest conditions and climate impacts across B.C. It offers the opportunity to work with leading experts and partners, apply cutting-edge science to real-world challenges, and contribute to transparent reporting that supports provincial decision-making and public awareness.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Doctorate in climatology (or related field) and at least two years’ experience, or a thesis-based M.Sc. in climatology (or related field) and at least four years’ experience.
  • Advanced experience in climate change science.
  • Demonstrated experience with field research techniques, experimental methods and design, statistics, data handling, organization and computer analysis techniques and associated quantitative analysis software.
  • Demonstrated experience producing technical reports, peer-reviewed scientific articles and publications.
  • Demonstrated experience clearly communicating technical information and climate consultation services, in writing and orally, to the natural resource management and scientific communities.
     

Preference may be given to a candidate with one or more of the following:

  • modelling expertise and experience
  • experience directing other’s scientific work to achieve research objectives
  • experience incorporating Traditional Ecological Knowledge with climate science
  • experience with digital analytics platforms/data visualisation/dashboard-based reporting
  • experience with large remote sensing datasets (e.g. satellite data, Lidar)
  • experience with biogeoclimatic zone (BEC) data, information, and interpretation


Provisos/Willingness Statements:

  • Must have a valid BC driver’s licence.
  • Willing and able to work outdoors in remote areas and in a variety of conditions.
  • Willing and able to fly in planes and helicopters.
  • Must hold, or be willing and able to obtain, Level 1 First Aid Certification (as necessary).
  • Must hold, or be willing and able to obtain, chain saw, ATV and snow machine operator certifications (as necessary).

About this Position:
This is a temporary opportunity until June 1st, 2027. This position may be extended or become permanent.
