The Team
At Duncan Law Courts, we are a dedicated team of eight providing essential registry and in-court services that support the administration of justice throughout the Cowichan Valley. As both a Provincial Court and Supreme Court registry, our team provides a broad range of services and supports matters across multiple court program areas. Staff work collaboratively to ensure matters are processed accurately, efficiently and in accordance with established policies and procedures. Team members are supported in developing a broad range of knowledge and skills, with opportunities to work across various registry functions. Teamwork, adaptability and a commitment to service are highly valued as we work together to support the justice system and ensure access to justice for the community we serve.

The Role
As the Court Administrator, you will play a key role in supporting fair and accessible justice by overseeing Supreme and Provincial Court programs and court administration operations in Duncan. This includes responsibility for technical, administrative, financial, and court operations, while working closely with judges, lawyers, justice partners, and members of the public. Appointed as a Justice of the Peace, Deputy District Registrar, and Registrar of Small Claims, you will exercise judicial authority while leading and mentoring a team of 8 staff, managing daily operations, performance, training, and scheduling. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Completion of a university degree or college diploma in a related discipline such as business administration, public administration or criminology or equivalent combination of education and work experience within the justice or legal system e.g., grade 12 and 3 or more years of experience working in the justice or legal system.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for an appointment as a Justice of the Peace in the Province of British Columbia.
  • Must have or be able to complete the Deputy District Registrar certification program to be a DDR of the Supreme Court of British Columbia and Deputy Registrar of the Provincial Court of British Columbia.
  • Minimum 3 years related clerical/office experience or 2 years of experience working with Court Registry related documentation and processes.
  • Must have experience using computers and software programs e.g., Word, Excel.

Preferences may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:

  • 3 years’ experience within the Court System (Court Administration/Sheriff Services). 
  • Experience as a Registry Technician.
  • Experience as a Justice of the Peace.
  • 6 months or more of leadership experience.
  • Experience with the Court Clerk Desktop (CCD).
  • Experience as a Court Clerk.
  • Experience using Civil and Criminal electronic tracking systems, JUSTIN, CEIS.

  • May be required to travel.
  • Maybe be required to work flexible hours.
  • May be required to work overtime.
  • May be required to work in other areas of Court Services Branch.
  • Will be required to work on a rotational schedule as late Justice of the Peace within the registry.
