Description

The Team
You’ll be joining the First Nations and Indigenous Relations (FNIR) team—a supportive, fun, and fast-paced group that values curiosity, integrity, and collaboration. Established in 2022, the team includes six other team members working across two streams, with staff located throughout the province in both office and remote settings. Known for their kindness, humour, and commitment to meaningful work, this team partners with a wide range of others—including Fire Centres, Incident Management Teams, and Indigenous Relations Branches—to influence everything from day-to-day fire operations to long-term policy and legislative change.

The Role
This position directly supports DRIPA engagement and Section 35 consultation with First Nations. Through planning, coordination, implementation, and documentation, your work will help BCWS to fulfill its legal obligations to support improvements in wildfire management policy and legislation. Outside of formal consultation, you will work with the FNIR team to develop guidance and training for First Nations engagement before, during, and after wildfire response. Candidates should be excited about the opportunity to advocate for First Nations priorities and perspectives as BCWS continues to refine its approach to working alongside First Nations.

Qualifications
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Master’s Degree ; OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree and 6 months of related experience; OR
  • Diploma and 1 year related experience; OR
  • Certificate or coursework and 2 years related experience; OR
  • Secondary School graduation (Dogwood, GED) and 3 years related experience; OR
  • Evergreen and 4 years related experience OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Related Experience may include

  • Experience working with Indigenous peoples and communities.
  • Experience with First Nations Consultation.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
  • Applicants who identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit).
  • Any of the following BCWS professional certifications
    • Task Force Leader (Operations)
    • Incident Commander 4
    • Service Branch Director (Logistics)
    • Supply Branch Director (Logistics)
    • Finance Section Chief 2
    • Plans Section Chief 2

  • To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structures.
  • To keep current on emerging issues.
  • To take in-house training and certification as required.
  • To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
  • To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
  • To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
  • To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned.
  • To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.

About this Position
This position can be based in any Ministry of Forests office. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.
