The Team:
The Forest Landscape Planning Branch is at the forefront of implementing one of the Ministry of Forests' most significant planning initiatives. This team leads the development of provincial policy, guidance, training and engagement strategies that shape how forest landscape planning is carried out across British Columbia. Through active collaboration with partners and stakeholders, the Branch helps shape policy, coordinate governance structures, and provide technical analysis that informs the future stewardship of BC's forests.

The Role:
The FLP Team Lead provides strategic leadership and expert direction in advancing the implementation and continuous improvement of British Columbia's Forest Landscape Planning framework. Leading a team of specialists, this role drives the interpretation and application of legislation, policy, guidance and training that are foundational to achieving provincial FLP objectives. By guiding innovative approaches to forest modelling, assessment and collaborative planning, the Team Lead helps deliver strategic outcomes and shape the future direction of forest landscape planning in British Columbia.

Qualifications:
Education:

  • Degree in Forestry or Natural Resource Management and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in forestry or natural resource management, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Experience:

  • Senior-level experience in leading or delivering resource planning and management at  the forest management unit or landscape level.
  • Senior professional or management level experience in a forestry or natural resource management field with direct involvement in the development of policy, legislation, regulation, best practices or operational standards.
  • Experience  leading multi-disciplinary teams at a regional or provincial scale and being accountable for managing assigned resources, meeting project goals and achieving results.
  • Experience leading, undertaking, or interpreting forest estate modelling or ecological modelling to support resource management decision making.
  • Experience communicating complex policy matters and providing professional advice and recommendation to diverse audiences, including drafting or preparing complex written analyses, briefings, technical reports, policy drafts and other documentation.
  • Experience supervising staff.

Professional Registration and Certification Requirements:

  • Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) in BC with Forest Professionals BC (FPBC). Note: “Immediately eligible for registration” means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.

Preference may be given to those with:

  • Experience engaging or consulting with Indigenous Nations; and/or,
  • Experience leading or undertaking socio-economic and environmental assessment for resource projects or programs.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
  • Must be willing and able to travel throughout the province to deal with policy-related matters.
  • Must be willing and able to work irregular hours to represent Branch and Ministry interests.

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent, full-time position available.
This position can be based in one of the following locations: Kamloops, Nanaimo, Nelson, Prince George, Smithers, Victoria, or Williams Lake.
Depending on the successful candidate’s location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
Applicants who do not fully meet the required qualifications may be considered for this position, but at a lower classification.
