Description

The Team
The BC Coroners Service is responsible, under the Coroners Act, for conducting thorough, independent investigations of factors contributing to the unexpected, unattended or unexplained deaths of persons in BC; and for issuing related recommendations to assist in preventing future deaths and improving community safety and quality of life for all British Columbians. The Community Coroner, under the direction of a Senior Coroner, works in a challenging environment by conducting compassionate, trauma-informed and culturally respectful initial scene investigations into sudden and unexpected deaths in the community.

The Role
As a Senior Coroner, you support the day-to-day operations of the BC Coroners Service’s provincial Field Operations Unit, working closely with a Director to ensure investigations are carried out thoroughly, independently, and with integrity. This role contributes to respectful, trauma-informed investigations of unexpected or unexplained deaths and supports recommendations that help prevent future deaths and improve community safety. The position values collaboration, cultural humility, and inclusive practices to ensure services are delivered fairly and with respect for the diverse communities across British Columbia.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • A degree in a legal, health, social sciences or a related field plus 3 years of recent related experience as a coroner in British Columbia, OR
  • A diploma in a legal, health, social sciences or a related field plus 5 years of recent related experience as a coroner in British Columbia, OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience may be considered.

Preference may be given to applicants with: 

  • Experience conducting coroners’ investigations to a timely conclusion.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience conducting field/scene investigations.

Related Experience may include:

  • Experience working effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders.
  • Experience gathering, synthesizing, evaluating and interpreting information from diverse sources.
  • Experience assessing risk and exercising judgement in a complex, public facing and demanding work environment.
  • Experience leading and/or mentoring staff.
  • Experience evaluating daily work and providing guidance.
  • Experience implementing quality improvement strategies.
  • Experience developing and writing concise, accurate reports, issues papers, business plans, proposals and briefing documents.


Willingness Statements:

  • Willingness to be available on a 24/7 basis to respond to urgent operational matters as required.
  • Willingness to participate in a rotational on-call schedule with other Field Operations Unit Senior Coroners.
  • Willingness to handle sensitive and confidential information, including material of a graphic nature, in accordance with established protocols and professional standards.
  • Willingness and ability to travel around the province.

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 5 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
