BC Timber Sales (BCTS) is a unique program of the Ministry of Forests (MOF). Working collaboratively with regional and district operations, BCTS plans, develops, and auctions a substantial portion of the province’s annual available timber volume. BCTS operates as a for profit entity within a government organization.  Its goal is to provide credible representative price and cost benchmark data for the Market Pricing System through auctions of timber harvested from British Columbia’s public land. BCTS operations are guided by three overarching principles, forest sector safety, reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and sustainable forest management.

The Team
The Okanagan Columbia Business Area (TOC) is a collaborative team of planning, development, engineering, harvesting, and silviculture professionals who work together to deliver sustainable forest management and timber development programs. The work directly supports BCTS TOC’s mandate through stakeholder engagement and the successful delivery and sale of apportioned timber volume.

The Role
As a Practices Forester, you will lead and support forest development, silviculture, forest health, and contract management activities, helping ensure forestry operations are sustainable, compliant, and aligned with environmental, business, and stewardship objectives. This role offers an opportunity to make a lasting impact by supporting healthy forests, strong communities, Indigenous partnerships, and responsible resource development while working with a diverse range of colleagues, partners, and stakeholders across British Columbia.

Job Overview
The Practices Forester is accountable for performing a wide variety of professional services including operational planning, cut block and forest road layout and development, planning and evaluating silviculture activities, and ensuring compliance with the Forest Stewardship Plan. The range of duties assigned to a particular Practices Forester will vary from Business Area to Business Area due to the geographic location, apportionment and management requirements.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

• A Registered Professional Forester (RPF), or be eligible for registration as an RPF with Forest Professionals British Columbia (FPBC) and two (2) years of experience in operational field forestry activities. 

Operational field forestry activities include the following: 

• • Timber harvesting monitoring/conformance
  • Cut-block development
  • Forest road engineering
  • Silviculture
  • Timber tenure development and administration
  • Planning integrated resource management

• Must possess at minimum a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence that does not limit or restrict the ability to conduct the duties of the job.

Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:

• Experience in more than one (1) operational field forestry activity.
• Experience working with Indigenous Peoples.
• Experience in contract management.

About this Position:
This position is located in Vernon.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.

Note: "Immediately eligible for registration" means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.
Applicants currently registered, or eligible for registration within six (6) months of employment, with FPBC as an Allied Science Forester in Training (ASFIT) or Forester in Training (FIT), may be considered for this position at the Licensed Science Officer 1A level.
