The Team
The Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB) oversees the regulation and licensing of liquor and cannabis establishments and events in B.C. With staff located across the province, the LCRB issues licences in B.C. for making and selling liquor, liquor special event permits, and legal cannabis sales. As part of this work, the LCRB also educates establishments about liquor and cannabis laws and rules, promotes safe establishments and safe communities according to public health and interest, and makes sure modern liquor and cannabis policy, laws and tools meet the needs of citizens. This position will work with the Compliance and Enforcement (C&E) Division which is responsible for licence inspections, investigations and audits, as well as educating licensees to prevent contraventions. If a contravention occurs, the Senior Inspector may take enforcement action.
The Role
Reporting to the Area Supervisor, the Senior Inspector – Liquor and Cannabis (SI) works with a wide range of stakeholders and requires superior skills and judgement in managing competing issues and interests. The position initiates, plans, coordinates, and oversees regulatory compliance and enforcement projects with other LCRB C&E staff and other agencies. They also prepare operational plans and lead covert inspections/operations in the field.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Law, Criminology, Social Science.) plus three years related experience.
• An equivalent combination of education, training and related experience may be considered.
• Required to possess a valid Class 5 driver’s licence.
Related experience must include at least three of the following:
• Conducting field-based regulatory inspections.
• Working in an environment requiring oversite and application of legislation at a federal, provincial, or municipal level.
• Gathering, assessing, and analyzing evidence and taking or recommending enforcement action.
• Giving direct evidence and withstanding cross examination in judicial or administrative hearings.
• Dealing effectively with individuals in complex or sensitive situations by using tact, persuasiveness, and diplomacy.
Preference may be given to candidates with the following:
• Three years experience in more than three of the above experience criteria.
Provisos/ Willingness Statements:
• Will be required to work hours that correspond to licensed establishment business hours such as evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and travel throughout B.C.
• May be required to use a privately-owned motor vehicle for work purposes.
• May be required to travel great distances by car alone, late at night in remote areas of the province under a variety of weather conditions.
• The Senior Inspector – Liquor and Cannabis (SI) spends a significant amount of time working in the field in a non-traditional work environment. The nature of this work requires the SI to travel great distances by car, willing to do a considerable amount of walking and be able to negotiate movement in busy establishments or special event locations which can include crowds, dim lighting, stairs, and loud noise. The work environment can include outdoor spaces with uneven terrain.

About this Position:
This position is based out of Burnaby.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
