BC Timber Sales (BCTS) is a unique program of the Ministry of Forests (MOF). Working collaboratively with regional and district operations, BCTS plans, develops, and auctions a substantial portion of the province’s annual available timber volume. BCTS operates as a for profit entity within a government organization.  Its goal is to provide credible representative price and cost benchmark data for the Market Pricing System through auctions of timber harvested from British Columbia’s public land. BCTS operations are guided by three overarching principles, forest sector safety, reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and sustainable forest management.

The Team
As part of BC Timber Sales – Cariboo Chilcotin, you’ll join an established Silviculture Team of four, working closely with colleagues in Harvesting, Planning, Engineering, and First Nations Referrals to sustainably manage Crown timber and regenerate healthy, mature forests. You’ll be supported by experienced BCTS employees who bring a wealth of knowledge and are committed to sharing their expertise and building up team members, creating an inclusive and collaborative workplace where everyone can contribute and grow.

The Role
As a Practices Forester with BC Timber Sales, you’ll prescribe silviculture activities to successfully reforest harvested openings, including milestone declarations and Site Plan amendments, helping ensure timber sales and contracts are ready to generate revenue within communities. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

• A Registered Professional Forester (RPF), or be eligible for registration as an RPF with Forest Professionals British Columbia (FPBC) and two (2) years of experience in operational field forestry activities. 

Operational field forestry activities include the following: 

• • Timber harvesting monitoring/conformance
  • Cut-block development
  • Forest road engineering
  • Silviculture
  • Timber tenure development and administration
  • Planning integrated resource management

• Must possess at minimum a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence that does not limit or restrict the ability to conduct the duties of the job.

Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:

• Experience in more than one (1) operational field forestry activity.
• Experience working with Indigenous Peoples.
• Experience in contract management.

Provisos:

• Must be willing and able to withstand the rigors of fieldwork.
• Must be willing to work in adverse weather conditions.
• Must be willing and able to travel to meet job requirements.
• Must be willing and able to travel in fixed and or rotary winged aircraft and or watercraft.
• Must be able to maintain membership with the Association of British Columbia Forest Professionals as a member in good standing.

About this Position:
This is a Temporary Opportunity until March 31, 2027. This Temporary Opportunity may become permanent.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established for future permanent and/or temporary opportunities in the BC Timber Sales Cariboo Chilcotin Business Area (Williams Lake, Quesnel)

Note: "Immediately eligible for registration" means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.
Applicants currently registered, or eligible for registration within six (6) months of employment, with FPBC as an Allied Science Forester in Training (ASFIT) or Forester in Training (FIT), may be considered for this position at the Licensed Science Officer 1A level.
