Description
The Team
The Research and Innovation team within the BC Wildfire Service supports evidence-based decision making across the organization by advancing applied research, innovation, and partnerships that strengthen wildfire and natural hazard management. Situated within a province wide emergency response organization, the team works across all four pillars of emergency management and collaborates closely with operational staff, policy groups, other ministries, academic institutions, industry partners, and Indigenous organizations. The team focuses on identifying priority research needs, coordinating internal and external research activities, and translating research findings into practical tools, policy advice, and strategic insights that improve preparedness, response capability, and long-term resilience.
The Role
This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about applying science to real-world challenges and making a meaningful impact across British Columbia. Working collaboratively with BC Wildfire Service staff, First Nations, researchers, land managers, and other partners, you will help advance evidence-based wildfire and prescribed fire practices by translating research into practical tools, guidance, training, and operational solutions. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in forestry, forest science, fire ecology or natural resource management, public or business administration, education, or social science field and one (1) year experience in research and financial/economic analysis; OR,
- Diploma in forestry, forest science, fire ecology or natural resource management, public or business administration, education, or social science field and three (3) years experience in research and financial/economic analysis.
- One (1) year experience leading complex projects and project components involving multiple stakeholders.
- Two (2) years experience in emergency management, wildfire management, and/or natural resource sciences or management.
- Preference may be given to candidates with experience developing collaborative relationships with Indigenous partners and working with Indigenous and/or Traditional Ecological Knowledge.
- Preference may be given to applicants with experience working with BC Wildfire Service.

- To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments, and corporate structures.
- To keep current on emerging issues.
- To take in-house training and certification as required.
- To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
- To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
- To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
- To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned.
- To travel throughout B.C.

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 5 at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
Flexible work options may not be available during emergency operations response periods.
