The Team
The Development Services team works with local governments, Indigenous communities, developers, engineers, and other stakeholders to support safe and sustainable development near provincial highways. We are a collaborative team that helps balance economic growth with public safety and the long-term integrity of the transportation network. Team members work closely together to review development proposals, solve complex issues, and provide professional advice that supports communities across the region.

The Role
As a Development Officer, you will review and make decisions on a variety of development applications that may affect provincial highways and transportation infrastructure. You will conduct site visits, assess potential impacts, work with applicants and stakeholders, and provide recommendations on subdivision and development proposals. This role offers a unique opportunity to combine technical knowledge, problem-solving, and relationship-building while supporting responsible growth and helping keep B.C.'s transportation system safe and effective. You'll work with a wide range of partners, including local governments, Indigenous communities, developers, engineers, and members of the public.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • A Diploma, Undergraduate Degree, or higher  in a related discipline (e.g.. Geography, Land Use Planning or Environmental Science) and a minimum of 1 year of related experience*; OR
  • Grade 12 or equivalent and minimum 5 years of related experience*; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and related experience* may be considered.

Related experience includes the following experience:

  • Experience working and training as a Development Services Technician; OR
  • Experience working in the area of land use planning and development, civil engineering, surveying, highway engineering, transportation engineering, urban land economics, or site planning.
  • Experience providing corridor management, site inspections, risk and mitigation assessments or permit application review.
  • Experience interpreting and applying legislation, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relations and communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing (including technical reports) with internal and external stakeholders.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

  • Post-secondary training in mathematics, surveying, highway engineering, transportation engineering, urban land economics, site planning, or human relations.
  • Experience in customer service, and negotiation.
