The Team

The Role
Your work includes reviewing medical histories, assessing scenes, determining the need for post-mortems, and preparing detailed reports or presiding over inquests. You’ll also provide important updates to families and may make recommendations to help prevent future deaths.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree in health, legal, social sciences or a related field, plus five (5) years’ relevant experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience may be considered.

Relevant experience must include each of the following:

  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience working collaboratively with multiple agencies.

  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience producing a variety of documents, such as case notes, briefing materials and quality improvement reviews, reports.

  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience gathering, synthesizing, evaluating and interpreting information from diverse sources.

  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in effectively communicating with individuals in sensitive or emotional circumstances.

  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience working independently and managing projects/files/cases to timely completion.

*An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience includes the following:

  • College diploma or certificate and minimum five (7) years of experience in each of the following areas: (a) working collaboratively with multiple agencies; (b) producing a variety of documents, such as case notes, briefing materials and reports; (c) gathering, synthesizing, evaluating and interpreting information from diverse sources; (d) effectively communicating with individuals in sensitive or emotional circumstances; and (e) working independently and managing projects/files/cases to timely completion.

  • Highschool diploma and minimum ten (10) years of experience in each of the following areas: (a) working collaboratively with multiple agencies; (b) producing a variety of documents, such as case notes, briefing materials and reports; (c) gathering, synthesizing, evaluating and interpreting information from diverse sources; (d) effectively communicating with individuals in sensitive or emotional circumstances; and (e) working independently and managing projects/files/cases to timely completion.

Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • Experience working within a death investigation system

  • Experience having worked in a position focusing on quality improvement with proven success in implementing new strategic business processes.

  • More years of experience and/or education
     

PROVISOS/WILLINGNESS STATEMENTS

  • Must be willing to travel within the province as required.
  • Must be willing and able to travel at all times of the day, in differing weather conditions within the designated geographic area within the province, when in the Field Coroner role.
  • Must be willing and able to accurately document scene events through head-to-toe examinations, case notes and photographic evidence.
  • Must be physically able to work in challenging environments, including attending scenes on foot (e.g., wilderness, elevated terrain, driving long distances).
  • Must be willing and able to routinely deal with traumatic death scenes including deceased with catastrophic injuries and/or decomposition.
  • Must be willing and available 24 hours/day for the assigned on-call period and for consultation with a Senior Coroner and/or the Unit Director following the on-call shift.
  • Must be willing and able to effectively communicate with individuals in sensitive and emotional circumstances.
  • Must be willing and able to demonstrate cultural humility, supporting a culturally safe environment for families of the deceased, stakeholders and colleagues.
  • Must be willing and able to manage sensitive, graphic, and confidential information.
  • Must be willing to interact with law enforcement officers and agencies in highly charged circumstances.
  • Subject to a satisfactory police record check including enhanced security screening.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Required to be available 24 hours/7days per week while on call.
  • Must have a valid class 5 driver’s licence and use of a personal vehicle that is always maintained in good and safe working condition and with appropriate insurance when on-call.
  • Required to travel on short notice to other, often remote, locations in the province upon direction of the Deputy Chief Coroner.
  • At all times acts to sustain and enhance the reputation and credibility of the Office of the Chief Coroner.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information.
  • Strong working knowledge of medical terminology or successfully complete a medical terminology course within the probationary period (6 months).
  • Strong working knowledge of computer technologies and ability to effectively utilize software to conduct research, enter data and prepare reports.

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 5 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
This position can be based out of any of the location(s) listed above.
