The Team

The Haida Gwaii Forest District (DHG) is an established, close‑knit team of 13 full‑time administrative and professional staff who work collaboratively to support sustainable natural resource management on Haida Gwaii. The team partners closely with Natural Resource Management (NRM) colleagues at the district level and works in an integrated, respectful relationship with the Heritage and Natural Resource Department (HNRD) of the Council of the Haida Nation (CHN). Staff in this district regularly collaborate with forest professionals, administrative staff, management, CHN staff and leadership, other technical specialists, and contractors. The work of DHG has meaningful impact—advancing public safety, supporting reconciliation with the Haida Nation, strengthening forest sector stability, contributing to the local economy, and stewarding the unique environment of Haida Gwaii. The team is known for being collaborative, professional, social, and long‑serving, with strong local relationships and a deeply integrated working culture with CHN partners.

The Role

This position provides professional engineering leadership within the district, overseeing contract management, supporting district health and safety, supervising staff as required, and managing road maintenance and capital works projects. The role includes budget oversight and direct engagement with forest sector clients, construction contractors, local governments, and the public. The work has a tangible impact on citizens by maintaining access to high‑value recreation sites and forest service roads, supporting safe travel, and ensuring clear communication with community partners. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in forestry engineering or related natural resource field (i.e. forestry)  and two (2) years of related experience, OR
  • Diploma in forestry engineering or related natural resource field (i.e. forestry) and minimum of four (4) years of related experience, OR 
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Valid Class 5 BC driver’s licence or equivalent.

Related experience must include all of the following:

  • Experience in contract and/or project supervision.
  • Experience in road, bridge and major structures design or construction or maintenance; gained within the last five (5) years
  • Program management experience which may include setting program goals and objectives.

Professional Registration and Certification Requirements:

  • Registered or immediately eligible for registration with the Forest Professionals BC (FPBC) as a Registered Forest Technician (RFT). 
    • Immediately eligible for registration” means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the registration process with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.

Preference may be given to applicants with experience in the following:

  • Budget management experience.
  • Experience supervising staff.
  • Cutblock and road layout experience.

Provisos and Willingness Statements: 

  • Willing and able to conduct field work which may include travel and outdoor work in all weather conditions and flying in remote locations.
  • Willing and able to operate a variety of equipment as required.

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
