The Team
The Health and Safety Compliance Unit (HSCU) – South-East Region is an established, collaborative team of professionals dedicated to protecting workers, supporting responsible mining practices, and contributing to safe and sustainable communities across British Columbia. Made up of a Senior Inspector of Mines/Supervisor and two Inspectors of Mines, the team works closely with colleagues across the Office of the Chief Inspector of Mines and other ministry partners to address risks, respond to public concerns, verify competency through certification, and promote compliance with health, safety, and environmental requirements.

Working in a technically diverse region that includes major coal operations, industrial mineral mines, underground mining, regional operations, and seasonal exploration activities, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with a wide range of experts and stakeholders. The Role
As an Inspector of Mines, you will play an important role in helping protect workers, communities, and the environment while supporting a safe, responsible, and sustainable mining industry in British Columbia. In this role, you will apply your technical expertise and sound judgement to promote compliance, identify and address risks, and contribute to meaningful health and safety outcomes. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Engineering or Geoscience (Mining, Civil, Environmental or Materials Science).
• Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a fully licensed professional with the British Columbia professional association as required by the specialty area (Engineers and Geoscientists BC (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of British Columbia)). Note: “Immediately eligible for registration” means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.
• Minimum of two years’ experience in mining, minerals, natural resources, occupational health and safety, heavy industry or regulating heavy industry.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Preference may be given to applicants with:

• Experience with mining activities such as exploration, aggregate mining, surface mining, mine construction, mine operations and/or processing methods.
• Experience with underground mining.
• Mine rescue and/or blasting experience.
• Experience regulating health and safety, permitting and/or the environment

About this Position:
Amendment July 14, 2026: Posting closing date extended to July 28, 2026.
This is a temporary opportunity until February 4, 2028. This position may be extended or become permanent.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
