The Team
The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is the Province of BC’s primary emergency response organization that operates year-round to deliver its mandate for wildfire management. BCWS also delivers expertise and services in response to other natural hazard emergencies. The BCWS is underpinned by the Four Pillars of Emergency Management – Prevention & Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery. BCWS partners with ministries, agencies, local, provincial, national, and international governments, First Nations, and Indigenous organizations to advance effective management of wildfire and other natural hazard emergencies. The BCWS operates provincially, delivering services through six Fire Centres, thirty-three Zones and two provincial centres in Kamloops and Victoria.
The Role
The Manager of Health and Safety will lead, advise and coordinate the development, implementation and evaluation of Health and Safety initiatives, programs and policies for the Ministry of Forests and BC Wildfire Service. The Manager will conduct formal investigations of workplace accidents/incidents in compliance with legislation and provide advisory and consultative services to ministry staff. A key function of this position is the provision of training and educating on OHS regulations and required practices and procedures. This position oversees the development, implementation and coordination of employee wellness and recognition program and fosters and enables both ministry and division initiatives and corporate projects. The purpose of this position is to facilitate the development of tools to prevent incidents, serious accidents and injuries and fatalities.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Related university degree, PLUS two years related experience in occupational health and safety, wildfire operational safety, mental health and well-being or public policy. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- One year of experience in an Occupational Health and Safety capacity including delivering related training such as: ergonomics, violence prevention and/or emergency preparedness.
- Experience in program development, implementation and maintenance; conducting training for adults; and a flexible approach in working with different levels of staff within an organization.
Preference may be given to candidates with any of the following:
- Experience working in the wildfire sector.

There is currently 1 full time position available. It can be performed from any BC Wildfire office in BC. An eligibility list may be established for future permanent and temporary opportunities. A CRC (Criminal Record Check) will be required. Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to a few days at home per week subject to an approved telework
