The Team
The Thompson Okanagan Region Strategic Initiatives, Thompson River Watersheds Forest Landscape Planning team is an established, high-performing team made up of a Team Lead and two Land and Resource Specialists who work closely with district, regional, BC Timber Sales, and other government partners. In this role, you will lead a small team in delivering a Forest Landscape Plan that helps guide how public forests are managed, balancing environmental stewardship, sustainable timber supply, community values, forest health, and the recognition and inclusion of First Nations’ rights, knowledge, laws, and practices. The Role
As the Team Lead, Forest Landscape Planner, you will lead the development of the Thompson River Watersheds Forest Landscape Plan, working closely with First Nations partners, forest licensees, local governments, communities, and other interested parties to help shape the future of forest management on public land. This role offers a unique opportunity to advance collaborative and inclusive planning by bringing together diverse perspectives, supporting transparency, and ensuring First Nations’ rights, knowledge, laws, and practices are respectfully incorporated into decision-making. You will play a key role in balancing environmental stewardship, sustainable timber supply, forest health, and community values while helping deliver innovative, long-term outcomes for forests and the people who depend on them.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a natural resource management related field (e.g., Forestry, Geography, or Natural Resource Management) or an equivalent combination of related education/training, plus three (3) or more years’ experience working in a natural resource discipline.
  • Experience managing technical and/or professional staff in natural resource management.
  • Experience in negotiating/mediating solutions with a variety of internal and external parties.
  • Experience with and knowledge of public consultation processes dealing with natural resource management issues.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.

Professional Registration and Certification Requirements

  • You must be registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) with Forest Professionals BC (FPBC). Note: "Immediately eligible for registration" means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.

Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

  • Collaborative program/project leadership experience related to forest resource or environmental management, land administration or planning.
  • Progressive resource management experience (e.g. Forests, Range, Research, Natural Resource Science), reflecting increasing levels of responsibility and complexity.
  • Progressive experience in identifying priorities, allocating and managing human and fiscal resources reflecting increasing levels of responsibility and complexity.
  • Experience leading programs and projects in a variety of settings, creatively resolving conflicts/issues involving multiple interests, and working effectively with internal and external stakeholders and collaborating with First Nations.

About this Position:
This is a temporary opportunity until April 28, 2028. This position may be extended or become permanent.
This position can be based in any of the following Ministry of Forest offices: Kamloops, Vernon, Penticton, Merritt, Clearwater, Lillooet.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
