Description

BC Timber Sales (BCTS) is a unique program of the Ministry of Forests (MOF). Working collaboratively with regional and district operations, BCTS plans, develops, and auctions a substantial portion of the province’s annual available timber volume. BCTS operates as a for profit entity within a government organization.  Its goal is to provide credible representative price and cost benchmark data for the Market Pricing System through auctions of timber harvested from British Columbia’s public land. BCTS operations are guided by three overarching principles, forest sector safety, reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and sustainable forest management.

The Team
The Business Administration Team is a collaborative and high-performing group within the BC Timber Sales Kootenay Business Area (TKO) based in Nelson. Working alongside forestry, engineering, planning, GIS, Indigenous relations, and leadership staff, the team provides the financial, administrative, and business services that support successful operations across the business area. The team plays a vital role in one of BC Timber Sales' largest and most diverse business areas, helping drive sound financial management, business planning, and continuous improvement. Team members are trusted advisors who value collaboration, innovation, accountability, and public service.

The Role
As Business Manager, you will provide strategic leadership for the financial, administrative, and business operations of the Kootenay Business Area. You will oversee business planning, financial management, procurement, contract administration, performance reporting, and resource allocation, while leading a skilled team of administrative professionals and supporting senior leadership in achieving operational objectives.This is an excellent opportunity for a strategic and results-oriented leader to make a meaningful impact on sustainable forest management and public resource stewardship. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

Job Requirements:

  • Post Secondary degree or diploma in accounting, business administration, public administration or commerce, or CPA designation or Government Financial Management Certificate Program and three years of directly related experience* in a financial or accounting role; OR,
  • Post Secondary education equivalent to a degree or diploma and five years of experience* directly related to financial or accounting role; OR,
  • Certificate, post-secondary education, and/or training in a related discipline (e.g. contract management, financial management, public administration, and/or business administration, etc.) with a minimum of seven (7) years’ related experience*; OR,
  • An equivalent combination of education and directly related experience may be considered.
  • Experience in program administration including allocating resources, leading and coaching diverse teams and supervising staff.
  • *Directly related experience must include a combination of the following:
    • Experience developing, managing and delivering programs or services related to financial or administrative services, strategic business planning, and procurement.
    • Experience in business planning, contract administration, budget management, risk management and internal financial controls.
    • Experience in program administration including allocating resources, leading and coaching diverse teams and supervising staff.

Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Professional accounting designation preferred (CPA).
  • Three or more years of supervisory experience in leading, developing, coaching, and evaluating diverse teams within a union environment.
  • Experience working in an environment that required the interpretation and application of Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) or government financial related legislation and policy (e.g. CPPM, FAA, BBMAA, and BTAA)

About this Position:
This is an 18 month temporary opportunity until approximately May 12, 2028. This temporary opportunity may become permanent.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and/or permanent vacancies in the BC Timber Sales Kootenay Business Area, Nelson.
