The Team
The Mines Health, Safety and Enforcement Division brings together professionals who help promote safe, healthy and compliant mining practices across British Columbia. As part of the Health, Safety and Compliance Unit, the Senior Inspector of Mines works with inspectors, technical specialists, industry partners and other stakeholders across diverse communities.
The Role
The Senior Inspector of Mines provides expert leadership on mine health and safety, supporting compliance with legislation, regulations and safety standards while supervising a team of inspectors. The role involves working with a wide range of people and perspectives, including mine workers, managers, unions and regulatory partners, and promotes a workplace culture where safety, fairness, respect and inclusion are central to decision-making.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Engineering or Geoscience (Mining, Civil, Environmental or Materials Science) and five (5) years’ related experience; OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Must have a valid BC Class 5 Diver’s Licence or equivalent.
Related experience must include all of the following:
- Experience in mining, minerals, natural resources, occupational health and safety, heavy industry or regulating heavy industry.
- Experience with progressive supervision, leading, coaching and/or mentoring staff (such as: assigning work, managing performance, addressing employee relations issues, and supporting recruitment activities).
Preference may be given to applicants with:
- Appointment as an Inspector of Mines.
- Experience in the mining sector.
- Experience regulating health, safety and permitting.
Provisos:
- Must be available to travel by air, fixed wing, helicopter and overnight on short notice. Must be able to climb ladders, walk up and down steep ramps.
- Work in underground conditions using appropriate protective equipment and in environments where exposure to chemical vapours, noise, dust, heat and cold are present.
- May be required to occasionally work evenings and weekends and be exposed to incident scenes involving serious injuries and fatalities.

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
