Description

The Team
Established under Section 351 of the Workers Compensation Act, the Workers' Advisers Office (WAO) is a branch of the Ministry of Labour and independent of WorkSafeBC.  We provide workers and their dependents with free advice, assistance, and in some cases representation, on appeals of WorkSafeBC decisions with which they disagree. We also provide training, mentoring and advice to union and other representatives helping injured workers with their disagreements with WorkSafeBC decisions.

The Role
The Executive Director leads a provincially distributed team of professional staff and serves as the primary liaison with senior officials in government, WorkSafeBC, labour organizations, professional associations, and other stakeholders. The position provides leadership on complex, sensitive, and precedent-setting workers' compensation and occupational health and safety issues, influencing policy development, legislative and operational practices, and the strategic direction of workers’ advisors’ services in British Columbia.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree in law, public administration or a related field, OR 

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • A minimum of four (4) years’ experience senior management experience in each of the following areas:

    • Leading a provincially delivered operational program, including responsibility for strategic planning, operational oversight, service delivery, and organizational performance. 

    • Leading and developing multidisciplinary teams, such as workforce planning, recruitment, performance management, employee engagement, labour relations, succession planning, and resolution of complex human resource matters.

    • Dealing with politically sensitive and provincially significant issues.

  • Experience providing senior leadership in a broader public sector environment.

  • Experience leading strategic public and stakeholder engagement with a wide variety of partners and external stakeholders who have diverse needs and interests. 
     

Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • Three (3) years experience in the labour and/or workers compensation fields.

  • Experience providing senior leadership in workers' compensation, labour relations, administrative justice fields.

This position can be based out of any of the location(s) listed above.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
