The Team
The East Kootenay Field Team within BC Timber Sales (BCTS), based in Cranbrook, is a collaborative and well-established team responsible for supporting the development, auction and administration of Crown timber in the region. The team works across a range of operational forestry activities, including timber development, road engineering, silviculture, timber sale administration and contract management. The Forest Technologist works closely with forestry professionals and technical staff, contractors, timber sale licence holders, and other regional and provincial BCTS staff. The team works collaboratively to plan and deliver timber sales while meeting legislative, contractual, environmental and safety requirements. This work supports BCTS in managing forest resources sustainably while contributing to the delivery of its timber sales program.

The Role
This is an opportunity for a forestry professional who is interested in gaining broad operational experience across timber development, road engineering, silviculture, harvest operations and contract administration. As a Forest Technologist, you will provide technical support through a combination of field and office-based work and contribute to the planning, development and administration of timber sales.In this role, you will conduct field inspections, collect and analyze data, prepare technical information and recommendations, administer contracts, and monitor forestry operations to ensure requirements are met. You may also support timber valuations, stumpage appraisals, road construction and maintenance, silviculture activities, and Timber Sale Licence administration. Your work will contribute to operational, financial and environmental decisions throughout the timber sale lifecycle. The position provides exposure to a variety of operational forestry activities and the opportunity to work with forestry professionals, contractors and licence holders while developing technical knowledge and experience within BCTS.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience:

• Graduation with a diploma or a degree in resource or forestry management.
• Registered with the Association of British Columbia Forest Professionals (ABCFP) as a Registered Forest Technologist (RFT) or Registered Professional Forester (RPF) AND a minimum of two years of experience in operational field forestry activities, OR
• Enrolled, or eligible for immediate enrollment, with the Association of British Columbia Forest Professionals (ABCFP) as a forest professional in training (TFT, ASTFT, FIT, ASFIT), for the purpose of obtaining an RFT or RPF designation AND a minimum of four years of experience in operational field forestry activities.
• Operational field forestry activities include one or more of the following:
  • Timber harvesting cut-block development
  • Forest road engineering
  • Silviculture
  • Harvest operations
  • Compliance and enforcement
• Must possess at minimum a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License that does not limit or restrict the ability to conduct the duties of the job.

Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

• Applicants with specific forestry activities experience, such as timber harvesting cut-block development, forest road engineering, silviculture and/or harvest operations.
• Applicants with contract administration experience.

Provisos:

• Must be willing and able to withstand the rigors of fieldwork.
• Must be willing to work in adverse weather conditions.
• Must be willing and able to travel to meet job requirements.
• Must be willing and able to travel in fixed and/or rotary winged aircraft and/or watercraft.
• Must be able to maintain membership with the Association of British Columbia Forest Professionals (ABCFP) as a member in good standing.

There is one (1) vacancy in Cranbrook.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established for similar vacancies within the BC Timber Sales Kootenay Business Area, Cranbrook.
Applicants who do not fully meet the required qualifications may be considered for this position, but at a lower classification.
