The Team
The Coastal Fire Centre Prevention Program is an established team of six staff who bring diverse experiences, skills, and perspectives to their work. Working in a collaborative and inclusive environment, the team partners with BC Wildfire Service colleagues, First Nations, local governments, industry, and community members to advance wildfire prevention and mitigation initiatives that help protect communities and valued resources across the Coastal Fire Centre. Team members are supported to share ideas, learn from one another, and contribute to meaningful work that drives positive change.
The Role
As a Wildfire Prevention Specialist, no two days are the same. You will contribute to a variety of prevention and mitigation initiatives, including wildfire prevention planning, FireSmart activities, fuel treatment projects, public education, training, and wildfire preparedness and response, with opportunities to take on responsibilities that align with your skills and experience. Working both independently and as part of a diverse team, you will collaborate with colleagues, partners, and communities to help reduce the impacts of wildfire and support safer, more resilient communities. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Degree in a field related to forestry, resource management or equivalent knowledge, plus 1 year recent related experience; OR
- Technical diploma in a field related to forestry, resource management, or equivalent knowledge, plus 3 years recent related experience; OR
- Grade 12 plus 5 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and training.
- Related experience is defined as operations or other disciplines related to natural resource management.
Preference may be given to candidates with a combination of, or all, the following:
- Incident Commander 4 Certification or higher.
- Registration or eligibility for registration with Forest Professionals BC.
Provisos /Willingness statement(s)
- To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments, and corporate structures.
- To keep current on emerging issues.
- To take in-house training and certification as required.
- To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
- To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
- To travel and/or overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
- To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned.
- To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence. (if relevant for position)

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 or more days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
Flexible work options may not be available during emergency operations response periods.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and/or permanent vacancies.
A Criminal Record Check (CRC) will be required.
