Description

The Team
The Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) Team helps communities, businesses, organizations, Indigenous communities, and residents recover from disasters by administering financial assistance programs fairly, consistently, and in accordance with legislation and policy. Working in a collaborative and supportive environment, the team combines technical analysis, client service, and problem-solving to help eligible applicants access recovery funding and rebuild after some of the most challenging events experienced across British Columbia.

The Role
As a Recovery Officer, you are often the first point of contact for Disaster Financial Assistance applicants, providing guidance throughout the application process, gathering and verifying information, and conducting initial eligibility reviews. This dynamic role combines client support, investigation, and analysis, requiring strong communication skills, sound judgment, and attention to detail to help ensure the timely and consistent delivery of disaster recovery assistance to individuals, businesses, Indigenous communities, and local governments throughout the province.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Post-secondary diploma (or higher) in business or public administration or related field AND

A minimum three (3) years of experience in each of the following: 

  • Development/delivery of programs or services to a wide range of clients.
  • Communicating with multiple levels of business, industry, or government.

A minimum of six (6) months of experience in each of the following:

  • Interpreting and applying legislation, regulations, or policies.
  • Analyzing financial information or claims adjudication.
  • Direct interaction with the public who may be under duress, providing both positive and negative responses.

OR An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following: 

  • Coursework completed in emergency management.
  • One (1) or more years of experience in claims adjudication OR analyzing financial information such as invoices, proof of payment documents or contracts.


Applicants must be willing and able to:

  • Be available 24/7 during response to emergencies and disasters and willing to perform a variety of duties within the scope of the position’s regular responsibilities.
  • Travel to disaster areas of the province on short notice and visit remote locations by vehicle, boat, air or foot overnight or extended hours in all weather conditions due to emergencies. 
  • Speak formally and informally to various audiences including town hall meetings, local and regional elected representatives, Indigenous communities, local government officials, and industry experts (e.g., insurance, construction).

There are 3 positions available. 
This is a temporary opportunity until 10/31/2027. This position may be extended or become permanent.
This position can be based out of any of the location(s) listed above.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home 5 days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and/or permanent vacancies.
