The Team
The Data Team is a small, established team within the Business Information Services Section that helps BC Timber Sales get the most value from its data and information. Working closely with colleagues across the province, the team supports trusted decision-making by improving how data is managed, analyzed, and shared, while fostering collaboration, respect, and inclusion across diverse disciplines and perspectives. As a Data Specialist, you’ll be part of a supportive team of three and work alongside analysts, GIS specialists, foresters, operational staff, and leaders to solve complex challenges, build strong relationships, and ensure reliable information is available to support BCTS programs and services.
The Role
As a Data Specialist, you will help turn complex data into trusted information that supports decision-making across BC Timber Sales. Working with people from a variety of backgrounds, disciplines, and perspectives, you’ll provide advice on data management, analysis, quality, and reporting, while building collaborative relationships and supporting inclusive, informed outcomes. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
• Master’s degree in computer science, geomatics, resource management or related field and 1 year of related experience; OR
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, geomatics, resource management or related field and 2 years of related experience; OR
• Diploma in computer science, geomatics, resource management or related field and 3 years of related experience; OR
• Certificate or course work in computer science, geomatics, resource management or related field and 4 years of related experience; OR
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Related Experience may include:
• Experience developing and managing large attribute data sets and experience with database management tools and applications.
• Experience developing reporting methodologies and performing custom data modelling, complex analyses and interpretations.
• Experience designing, gathering and testing business requirements, complex queries and report designs.
• Experience with writing complex SQL queries and optimized SQL-based ETL pipelines.
Preferences
• Experience in BCTS workflows and processes.
• Experience in client service including prioritizing, troubleshooting and resolving client data and reporting issues.
• Experience in programming languages such as Python or R.

This position can be based in any BC Timber Sales office. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to full time at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
