Description
The Team
The Southeast Fire Centre (SEFC) Prevention Team, based in Castlegar, BC, delivers wildfire prevention programs across the region, supporting six wildfire zones, two resource districts, and a wide range of partners and stakeholders. Reporting to the Deputy Fire Centre Manager, Programs, and supervised by the Senior Wildfire Officer, Prevention, the team consists of two Wildfire Prevention Officers, a Prevention Specialist, and a Prevention Clerk. In addition to leading wildfire prevention initiatives, the team supports other Fire Centre program areas, including Information and Communications, Preparedness and Response, Corporate Wildfire Services, and other operational priorities
The Role
The Wildfire Prevention Officer supports the fire center prevention program through two primary focus areas: the Wildfire Risk Reduction Program and the Prescribed Fire Program. The role provides technical expertise, strategic advice, and program leadership to help reduce wildfire hazards across the landscape through fuels management, risk-based mitigation, and the application of prescribed fire. Working collaboratively with government agencies, Indigenous partners, industry, local governments, and communities, the Wildfire Prevention Officer advances prevention objectives, promotes public awareness, and supports the implementation of effective wildfire risk reduction strategies
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Degree in a field related to forestry or resource management plus two (2) years recent related experience; OR
- Technical diploma in a field related to forestry, resource management plus four (4) years recent related experience; OR
- Grade 12 plus six (6) years related experience; OR
- An equivalent combination of education, experience and training may be considered; AND
- Related experience is defined as experience gained in operations or other disciplines related to natural resource management.
- Experience in program or project management.
- Experience working on land and resource management issues.
- Preference may be given to candidates who are registered or eligible to immediately register with the Association of BC Forest Professionals (ABCFP) as a Registered Forest Technologist (RFT) or an equivalent as identified by the ABCFP.
- Preference may be given to candidates with experience working in the BC Wildfire Service
- Preference may be given to candidates with senior Fireline Certification (ex. Type 2 or higher) or Incident Commander 3.

About this Position:
There is currently two temporary opportunities available until April 3 2027, they may be extended or become permanent. These positions can be performed from any BC Wildfire Service or Ministry of Forest office in British Columbia. An eligibility list may be established for future temporary or permanent positions.
A Criminal Record Check (CRC) will be required. Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to a few days at home per week subject to an approved telework
