The Team:
The Mining Team and Southeast Coal Mining Team are at the forefront of environmental stewardship for some of British Columbia's most significant resource projects. Working alongside specialists, partner agencies, and Indigenous communities, these teams provide expert oversight that helps safeguard BC's water, land, air, and living resources. This is thoughtful, high-impact work delivered in a collaborative environment that values expertise, curiosity, and continuous learning.
The Role:
As a Senior Environmental Protection Officer, you will help lead the regulatory oversight of some of BC's most significant mining projects. Working across disciplines and organizations, you will provide expert advice, coordinate complex reviews, and support decisions that balance environmental protection with responsible resource development. Through engagement with Indigenous Nations, proponents, communities, and government partners, you will build productive relationships, navigate complex issues, and contribute to outcomes that matter across the province.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Master of Science Degree or higher in Environmental Management, Applied Science or Natural Sciences with at least three (3) years of related experience; OR,
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Management, Applied Science or Natural Sciences with at least five (5) years of related experience.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Related experience is defined as experience related to environmental protection and industrial and/or municipal waste management, and includes experience in at least two (2) of the four (4) aspects below:
- Experience with reduction, recycling, treatment and disposal technologies.
- Experience conducting environmental monitoring, assessments and reporting related to waste discharges.
- Experience with environmental planning processes such as waste management planning.
- Experience with hazardous material spill response, special waste and contaminated sites.
Professional Registration and Certification Requirements:
- Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Registered Professional Agrologist (PAg) with the BC Institute of Agrologists (BCIA), Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Registered Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC). Note: “Immediately eligible for registration” means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.
Preference may be given to those with one (1) or more of the following:
- Experience with regulatory administration of waste management discharges to the environment.
- Experience in liaison with environmental regulatory agencies.
- Experience with the interpretation and application of the Environmental Management Act.
- Experience working in the mining industry.
- Experience with Area Management Planning, the conduct of industrial/sector audits and the development and application of risk assessment and socio-economic analyses.
Additional Requirements:
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence, or equivalent.
- Must be willing and physically able to conduct field work.
- Willing and able to work in adverse weather conditions.
- Willing and able to work evenings, weekends and holidays, when required.
- Must be able to represent the program at public meetings and events.
- Willing and able to travel and meet the transportation requirements of the position.

About this Position:
There are currently two (2) permanent, full time opportunities available. One position will be based with the Southeast Coal Mining Team and one position will be based with the Mining Team.
Each position can be based in a Natural Resource Sector office. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.
Depending on the successful candidate’s location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.
