Description

The Team
The Health & Safety Team, situated within the ministry's Corporate Operations branch, is dedicated to ensuring the physical and psychological safety of all ministry employees. This established team is made up of Managers of Occupational Health and Safety, a Project Assistant, and colleagues focused on Health and Well-being. The team is led by the Director of Health and Safety. The team works closely with employees and leaders across various service areas, including those supporting children, youth, and families, such as social program officers, clinicians, youth custody officers, and staff from provincial office divisions like finance and policy development. The Health & Safety team is known for its collaborative approach and openness to new ideas, skills, and perspectives, creating a dynamic environment for both experienced and new team members.

The Role
As the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing and developing a comprehensive OHS program that includes areas such as Occupational First Aid, Targeted Threat Assessments, and the Prevention of Violence in the Workplace. This role involves building strong relationships with employees and leaders to ensure compliance with OHS regulations, the Workers Compensation Act, and collective agreements. You will provide expert advice on incident prevention strategies and consult with supervisors to reduce workplace injuries, illnesses, and claims related to short-term illness and injury, WorkSafe BC, or long-term disability. This role offers a mix of strategic planning, expert consultation, and hands-on leadership, providing an exciting opportunity for those eager to share their expertise while also pursuing continuous career growth and learning.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., Bachelor of Applied Science in Occupational Health and Safety) and two (2) years related experience; OR
  • Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Program Diploma or Certificate, from an accredited institution of education and two (2) years related experience; OR
  • An equivalent combination of relevant education, experience and/or training in a related field may be considered.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid B.C. Class 5 driver’s license (Note - if you currently have a valid driver’s license in Canada, and if you are the successful applicant, you must acquire a valid B.C. Class 5 driver's license immediately).


Related experience must include some experience in all of the following areas:

  • Program development, implementation and maintenance, including policy and procedure development while operating within a legislative and regulatory framework.
  • Leading incident investigations related to employee and worksite safety, including the assessment of magnitude severity, risks and impacts on employee and worksite.
  • Interpretation, application, and compliance of OHS programs and activities in relation to Acts and Regulations, collective agreements, government policies and OHS best practices.


Preference may be given to applicants with one or more of the following:

  • Completion of “Threat Assessment and Management” training, or a recognized equivalent course
  • Experience developing, and facilitating adult training sessions, virtually and in-person, for small and large groups (e.g. OHS committee training, Ergonomic Assessment training, Violence Risk Assessment Training, Incident Investigation Training and Emergency Warden training).

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to four (4) days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
This position can be based out of any of the location(s) listed above.
