The Team

The Financial Operations team is a small but impactful group within the Financial Services Branch that plays a critical role in supporting employees across Emergency Management and Climate Readiness (EMCR), including those involved in emergency response activities. As a growing team, members work closely with ministry staff, supervisors, managers, external service providers, and partner organizations to ensure employees receive accurate and timely payroll support. The team is known for its dedication to service excellence, collaboration, and commitment to supporting employees when they need it most.

The Role

The Payroll Assistant provides payroll administration and support services for EMCR and designated external CORE Team ministries. This position is responsible for processing payroll transactions, providing guidance on payroll systems, policies, and collective agreement provisions, and supporting the administration of time, leave, overtime, standby, travel, and emergency response compensation processes. This is an excellent opportunity to build specialized payroll expertise in a fast-paced and dynamic environment while supporting employees who deliver critical services to British Columbians during emergency preparedness, response, and recovery operations. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Grade 12 graduation or equivalent;
  • A minimum of one year of payroll experience or one year of corporate financial experience.
  • A minimum of six months experience in all of the following:

             •    Working in an office setting and with computerized systems.
             •   Responding to routine verbal and written inquiries from clients.
             •   Experience with MS Office
             •   Database experience including entering, updating and retrieving data; ensuring data integrity; navigation to conduct searches; and extract information.
             •   An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.


Preference may be given to candidates with:

  • Payroll or financial administration coursework
  • Experience working with collective bargaining agreements.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft/CHIPS.
  • Experience with Time and Leave as a Time/Leave Keeper or Scheduler


Candidates must be willing and able to: 

  • Be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments, and corporate structures.
  • Work on-call, be deployed throughout the province, and work extended hours and weekends with limited notice during or after increased emergency response levels.  
  • To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned.
  • Travel occasionally.

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 5 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
