The Team
Surrey Provincial Court, Court Administration is an established team that supports the delivery of court services for adult criminal, youth, family, child protection, small claims, and traffic matters. Working alongside more than 72 staff and justice system partners, the team provides registry and in-court support services that help ensure access to justice across the community. The team is known for its collaborative approach, dedicated staff, and commitment to public service.

The Role
The Justice of the Peace exercises delegated judicial authority and makes independent decisions in accordance with legislation, court rules, policies, and procedures. Responsibilities include adjudicating applications, reviewing and processing court documents, preparing and issuing court orders and related documents, and maintaining judicial records. This role requires sound judgment, professionalism, and the ability to work effectively under pressure while interacting with a wide range of clients and justice system partners.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent (GED)
  • 3 years recent experience working in a legal environment, or 2 years of experience working in Court Administration
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in keyboarding, data entry, word processing, standard computer applications and software programs (ex: Windows, MS Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Must have or be eligible to obtain an appointment as Justice of the Peace in the province of British Columbia within 6 months

Preference may be given to candidates with:   

  • Experience in Court Programs and Applications (JUSTIN, CEIS, CCD, ARC, CTAS)
  • Experience as a Court Clerk and/or Registry Clerk
  • Experience as a Justice of the Peace

Provisos: 

  • Attendance and completion of relevant training is required.
  • May be required to work flexible hours, including varied shifts and overtime on short notice.
  • May be required to travel, including travel in adverse weather conditions and work in other geographical areas, including circuit court locations. Must have reliable transportation and/or be willing to travel with others.
  • Able to lift heavy objects up to 30 lbs.

About this Position:
This is a temporary/auxiliary opportunity until September 21, 2029. This position may be extended or become permanent.
This position requires full-time, in-person work at the physical location listed.
