The Team
This position is within the Justice and Public Safety (JPS) subgroup of the Justice, Health & Revenue (JHR) Group within the Ministry of Attorney General's Legal Services Branch (LSB). The JPS team is an established group consisting of just under 30 lawyers, one paralegal, several legal assistants, a Legal Office Manager, and the Deputy Supervising Counsel. This is a highly collegial team that values teamwork and mentorship, and the successful candidate will work collaboratively with colleagues in each of these roles. The JPS team provides legal advice and services to clients in the Ministry of Attorney General, the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, youth justice program areas in the Ministry of Children and Family Development, and parts of the Ministry of Transportation and Transit that are responsible for driver and road safety. This work is diverse and engaging, and it makes tangible contributions to public safety and the administration of justice in British Columbia.
The Role
As Legal Counsel, you will provide expert legal advice to ministry clients, assisting with policy, program, and legislation development. You'll work on complex and unique files with a supportive and collaborative team. A significant portion of your work will involve handling confidential and sensitive matters, keeping you at the forefront of legal developments. This position is perfect for someone who is passionate about making a difference through their legal expertise.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Member of the Law Society of British Columbia in good standing OR immediately eligible for membership in the Law Society of British Columbia;
- This Level is applicable to lawyers with twelve (12) or more years of call to the bar (called in 2015 or earlier), with the relevant experience. Experience assessed in this or another jurisdiction as equivalent may be credited for hiring purposes for placement on the range.
- Recent experience (within the last 3 years) providing legal advice to government clients on complex matters in one or more of the following areas: policing law; administrative and regulatory law; statutory interpretation; criminal law; legislative initiatives.
- Experience effectively working both independently and as a member of a team.
- Experience organizing a busy practice and managing files with competing priorities to meet deadlines.
Preference may be given to applicants with:
- Recent experience (within the last 2 years) providing advice to government clients on matters directly related to policing law.

This is a temporary opportunity until 04/30/2027. This position may be extended or become permanent.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 5 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
